A river and its mushrooms!

Mushrooms are a major component of local biodiversity! The Ruisseau Jackson watershed is rich in forest mushrooms of all kinds. Here are some specimens photographed by Martin Gauthier from our conservation organization. They are all beautiful and fascinating!

Unlike plants, fungi cannot synthesize their own food using solar energy. They don’t have chlorophyll! The latter allows plants to capture energy from the sun (photosynthesis) and to manufacture sugars from the carbon found in the air. This is why fungi have developed very specific modes of growth: parasitism, symbiosis and saprophytism!

We conserve what we love and we love what we understand.
