In 2021, Développement ornithologique Argenteuil (DOA), Ruisseau Jackson Protected Natural Area (RJANP) and the Municipality if Morin-Heights identified sites to install bird nesting boxes for two endangered bird species; the wood duck and the tree swallow. This initiative was organized in the spirit of Ruisseau Jackson’s nature conservation mission. Four wood duck and ten tree swallow nests were installed on the banks of the creek.
The goal of this 10-year-long program is to provide nesting sites for bird species that nest in cavities, but rarely breed in the area because of the lack of natural spaces. These species have been declining over the years, and the initiative will foster their recovery locally and regionally.
The nesting boxes are not visible and are not accessible from municipal trails but one can find out more about them by attending a short presentation this fall!
A first inspection of the nesting boxes will take place this October. It will be the occasion to determine if any new winged tenants have arrived. Join us to find out!
Martin Picard, ornithologist and director of DOA will present the project and provide information on the birds of the region. The free presentation will be given in French (participants can ask questions in English).
