Protecting the territory
The initiative aims to protect an area of approximately 20 km2 around the Ruisseau Jackson watershed, whose very distinct environmental characteristics make it more susceptible to rapid deterioration. The consequences of this decline could significantly impact water quality in the region.
The protected area around Ruisseau Jackson extends from Lac Daïnava to Lac Écho by Lac Seale, which is at the geographic centre of the area of interest. Downstream of Lac Écho, Ruisseau Jackson flows into Rivière à Simon, which drains into Rivière du Nord. The watershed is located in traditional territories of the Algonquin people and of the Anishinaabe (Anishinabewaki (ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ)).
Target outcomes
A series of actions, measures, decisions and interventions by landowners and project partners must be set in motion to preserve and protect the territory.
The partners initially aim to foster a concerted solidarity movement and ensure that landowners are informed of the various measures that contribute to the overall vision.
Below are examples of the actions that are planned for the years ahead.
- Landowner declarations of intent, which will morally bind property owners to respect the environmental characteristics of the land on which their homes are located in as much as possible
- Management, land use and territory development agreements with partners
- Amended zoning regulations in the Ruisseau Jackson floodplain
- Land donations to municipalities
- Conservation easements
- New natural reserves on private land
- Land sales to conservation groups
